Motivation. Where does it come from, where does it go. A thought of mine recently is how fleeting motivation has been since covid happened. Prior to covid, my ability to access motivation was seamless, almost without thinking. However since covid has changed my life entirely and changed my whole plan for the year, motivation is not in my side pocket any more. Sometimes I have to dig really deep, like I’m looking for that quarter in my purse to pay for parking. Does this sound relatable? Has covid changed any parts of your normal behavior? For better or worse?
I have to say that although I’ve lost some of my motivation, I’ve also been given the chance to explore a new side of myself. I was so used to taking motivation for granted, that I had no idea how hard it could be to try to summon it. It has helped me understand other people different from me a lot easier. Heck, sometimes I enjoy being able to relax without feeling motivation kicking my relaxation station door down and telling me to start working. I’m starting to sound like a work-a-holic at this point. But hey, covid has been a work-a-holic rehab for sure. I also do miss how I used to be as well though. It was exhilarating to say the least.
But going back to the general topic of motivation, it is interesting to learn about what motivates other people to things they do. For example, I was chatting with a friend the other day (masked of course), and I was asking her about what motivates her to do a PhD. She said that it really ties back to her passion for her research. It is interesting how much passion and motivation can be so interconnected. It would seem especially in her case that her motivation was driven by her passion for the topic. I often find in some cases that my motivation comes from wanting to reach a goal or to learn something new by completing a project. It is certainly sometimes hard to figure out what motivates you to do something, but I think it is important to learn what does. I think it reveals a lot about oneself and their work style. What do you think motivates you to do things? To make it easier, what do you think gets you out of bed in the morning? This might bring up some uncertainty feelings because sometimes we just get into a routine and keep doing the same things. But hey, maybe if you realize that, you can switch things up and make some positive or needed changes.
